synopsis
For Love of the Boy is an irreverent musical comedy by Frank Terry, which received rave reviews at several professional readings and is quickly gaining steam within the New York City theater community. The show combines a fast-paced, farcical script, quirky, comical lyrics and an upbeat, jazzy score into a touching portrayal of first love and all the crazy things it makes us do.
For Love of the Boy is the story of New Clanton, Pennsylvania, a tiny town where almost everybody is gay, but no one seems to know it. The drama unfolds as Dan, the town's shy, loveable church organist falls head over heels for Brian, the teenage star of the local community theatre. When Brian's father (New Clanton's pastor) gets word of his son's potential for illicit behavior, he threatens to send Brian to cool off with relatives in Alaska. Brian takes this opportunity to run away to New York City to pursue a career on Broadway where he falls into the clutches of Kevin Blondrind, a scheming sexual predator and musical theater writing genius (Stephen Sondheim in caricatured form). Dan leads the inhabitants of New Clanton on a rescue mission to the sinful streets of New York City where each small-town personality gets a little dose of reality and learns just how much they're willing to do For Love of the Boy.
